Key Tips Can Help Students Excel in Online School Environments

Key Tips Can Help Students Excel in Online School Environments

Online School Tip #1: Never do schoolwork in your bed.

In theory, it sounds like a great idea because your bed is warm and comfy, but that is precisely where the problem lies. Your brain naturally associates your bed with sleeping and relaxing. This association will severely reduce your productivity while doing schoolwork. My recommendation is to create a study space and complete your schoolwork there. I’ve done my work at the dining table for several years, until I invested in a desk for my second year of high school.

Online School Tip #2: Remember that your teachers are always there to help you.

Naturally, I’m a pretty shy person. I don’t like to reach out and ask people for anything, fearing I will annoy them, but this brought some issues in high school. I learned that if I don’t communicate with my teachers, I would only make things more difficult for myself. It’s your teacher’s job to help you… that’s why they’re there. So, don’t feel shy about reaching out if you have questions.

Online School Tip #3: Prepare for technical difficulties.

Technical difficulties are inevitable when doing online school, which is why it is essential to be prepared. Things like making sure your laptop is charged, or checking that your internet is working before logging into class, go a long way. It is also important to know your school’s tech support contact information, in case you need assistance.

Online School Tip #4: Prevent burnout, find balance.

At the start of the school year, things can feel overwhelming. For me, the beginning of the semester is a two-week-long crying session. I usually end up finding myself doing nothing but schoolwork. And, as you can imagine, it’s not that healthy. I learned the importance of balancing work with something I like to do. Creating time for yourself to take a break and relax is vital. Otherwise, you will find yourself burnt out and exhausted. And, nobody likes that!

Online School Tip #5: Learn how to discipline yourself.

One of my favorite quotes is:

“Everyone must choose one of two pains: the pain of discipline, or the pain of regret.” – Jim Rohn.

While it’s important to take breaks and rest, it is also essential to have the discipline to tell yourself when it’s time to work. In an online school setting, there isn’t a teacher constantly watching you to ensure you get the work done. This leaves the responsibility on your shoulders. When you don’t have self-discipline, you won’t get enough done, and it will be harder to keep up with the content.

It takes a lot of time to establish good habits. And, throughout the ten years of online school that I’ve experienced, I’ve seen myself change, as I’ve learned different lessons. It’s my hope that the tips listed above will help other students have a positive experience as a student in an online school.
